About Vice Chancellor

Prof. Dr. M. Tahir Shah (T.I.) assumed the charge of the 1st Vice Chancellor of the FATA University FR Kohat on January 18, 2016. Dr. Shah was born in the Mashwani tribe of village Sirikot, District Haripur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 1956. He got his primary education from his village, higher secondary education from the Central Model School Mianwali, intermediate from the Islamia College Peshawar, B.Sc. and MSc from Department of Geology, University of Peshawar. He was appointed as a Lecturer in the National Centre of excellence in Geology, University of Peshawar in 1982 and completed his M. Phil in 1986. He earned Ph.D. degree from the University of South Carolina, Columbia (USA) in 1991 under the USAID Thomas Jefferson scholarship. He has completed one year Fulbright Post-Doctoral research in University of Nevada, Reno, USA (1999-2000) and one year Commonwealth Post-Doctoral research in the University of Leicester, UK (2001-2002).

Dr. Shah is among the leading geoscientists in Pakistan having published 75 abstracts in the proceedings of national and international conferences and more than 160 research papers in the journals of international repute. He has supervised 36 M.Phil and 14 Ph.D. scholars and is the Chief Editor of the HEC recognized X category Journal of Himalayan Earth Sciences. He has the leadership qualities to manage the problems in efficient manner. This is because of all these qualities that he has completed national and international projects of immense importance with full zeal and spirits. He has completed HEC funded project worth of 36.954 million rupees as a Project Director and several other national and international projects as Principal and Co-Principal Investigator under the auspices of Pakistan Science Foundation, Higher Education commission and US National Science Foundation. Before joining the present position, he was actively involved in the completion of 800 million rupees PC-1 project of Strengthening of the National Centre of Excellence in Geology, University of Peshawar.

On the basis of his excellent teaching, research and administrative capabilities, he has been awarded several awards, commemorative certificates and gold medals. Important among these are the Civil award Tamga-i-Imtiaz in 2014, Presidential award Izaz-i-Fazeelat in 2001, Earth Scientist of the year award in 1994, IUCN 2001 Environmental award, Gold Medal by the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, Star Laureate award and Dr. Zafar H. Zaidi Gold Medal, Productive Scientists of Pakistan award. For last several years he is receiving the Research Productivity award on the basis of his research. He remained the Vice President of the Geological Society of Pakistan for two years.

Dr. Shah has specialty in economic geology, mineral exploration, geochemistry and environmental geology. He has been teaching these courses to M.Phil. and Ph.D. scholars. He has presented papers related to these subjects in various international conferences held in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Austria, China, Italy, UK and USA and has delivered lectures at the University of South Carolina, the University of Nevada and the University of Eastern Washington in USA and in the University of Leicester, UK by invitation. He remained the member of the National Curriculum Revision Committee of the Higher Education commission and the Board of Studies of various universities, the Board of Governors and the Board of Directors of various institutions. Dr. Tahir Shah, besides teaching and research, has also made major contributions towards promotion of academics, mineral exploration and environmental management during his 34 years of service.
